The tax season will soon be upon us. Below are some annual reminders.
GO GREEN by signing up for electronic delivery of your Form W-2! As part of our commitment to environmental sustainability and efficiency, UNC Charlotte employees have the option to receive their Form W-2 electronically. This includes faculty, staff, temporary and student employees. Sign-up is required by Dec. 31.
Note: Employees who previously elected to receive their Form W-2 electronically do not need to take action again this year. See this FAQ for more information.
What are the benefits of signing up?
Faster. No waiting for your Form W-2 to arrive in the mail. Log into UNC Charlotte's secure my.charlotte.edu portal, and you will be able to download a copy or print it to send with your tax return.
Secure. This confidential document is protected by the secure My Charlotte portal. Two-factor authentication via DUO is required to access Forms W-2 from the My Charlotte portal. Electronic delivery means no one can steal it out of your mailbox.
Accessible. You can access your Form W-2 anywhere you have access to the internet.
Green. By eliminating the need to print and mail individual forms to employees, you are supporting the health of our environment and sustainability of UNC Charlotte.
Make sure your address is current.
Verify that your mailing address (or permanent, if no mailing address is provided) is correct in Banner by Dec. 31 annually. At least one active address is required in Banner whether you elect a paper or electronic Form W-2.
Check your federal tax withholding.
The IRS released a new withholding certificate in 2020 that applies to tax years 2020-2026. A “paycheck checkup” is encouraged for all employees to ensure their tax withholdings are correct. Follow these IRS tips and use the IRS withholding calculator to perform a quick “paycheck checkup.”
Update your withholding if necessary.
If you've determined that you need to update your current year’s withholding amount using the tools provided above, changing the withholding on your Form W-4 is simple. Note that due to IRS restrictions on foreign national taxation, this option is not available for our foreign national employees.
