General Accounting

The General Accounting department is a unit of the Controller’s Office charged with preserving the integrity of the university’s general ledger. The General Accounting team is responsible for the reconciliation and transmission of accounting data between the university and the North Carolina Office of the State Controller on a monthly basis. General Accounting is also charged with the reconciliation of bank accounts, subsidiary ledgers, balance sheet accounts and accounting for long term debt. General Accounting staff serve a critical role in the year-end closing process, the conversion to accrual basis accounting, and the preparation of the university’s financial statements.

General Accounting Information

  • Monthly close certifications – In compliance with the North Carolina Office of State Controller standards, all monthly close certifications will be completed by the tenth business day of the following month.
  • Fiscal year end deadline – The North Carolina Office of the State Controller requires all agencies to submit financial information by the 60th day after the end of the fiscal year. General Accounting will be participating with other Financial Services units to meet this deadline.
  • Financial Management Guidelines – See for guidance and objectives related to analyzing monthly financial and budgetary activity within funds and accounts. These guidelines emphasize the need for review on a monthly basis to ensure expenditures are within budget, errors are corrected on a timely basis, and funds are being spent appropriately and as authorized.
